Sherlock Babies: Would You Do it?

sherlock babiesSherlock Babies: Would You Do it?

I don’t quite know what to make of the fact that in 2012, 5 couples chose to name their baby Sherlock!  Five! There are five Sherlock babies out there and presumably a few more that were born in 2013.

According to RadioTimes, that name ranked along with Ulysses,  Roland and Timofey at five a piece.

I grew up with a kid named Roland in the neighborhood, I would have thought that name to get more than five.  It’s also interesting that the name Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch is the star of the BBC Sherlock series) managed to get 114 babies lined up with the name in 2012.

It would be fascinating to see how those 5 Sherlock babies turn out with that name.  They say that your name can play an important part in your life, with some names like Winston and Roosevelt having a higher rate of success as adults.  But do kids with rich sounding names aspire to their names, or do wealthy families give out those sorts of names?

So would naming your son Sherlock push him to greater heights of learning and intellect? Or will the inevitable beatings on the school playground turn him into a tough competitor and/or a man with no heart?

I am reminded of that famous Johnny Cash song “A Boy Named Sue”.

I wonder what the parents are thinking.  Are they fans of Sherlock Holmes?  Was it the crazed, drug addicted  Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock they were thinking of?  Or was it the slightly awkward but adorable Sherlock of Elementary
they adore? What about the high functioning sociopath persona of the BBC Sherlock?

Having named four children myself, it is not a task that one takes lightly.  Having said that, my own parents named me after a 1950’s Swedish sex kitten that my Dad was totally in love with.  (Guess the name and let me know in the comments who you think that is! ).  Also, there were those parents who named their baby Hashtag a year or so ago.  Ok, maybe people don’t really think these things through.

Sherlock babies.  What do you think?

Hahahhaa…. no way would I do it but I know there are lots of parents out there that don’t even stop to think about what a name can do to your ego.

  2. That’s too funny, but with the movies starring Robert Downey Jr, I am actually a little surprised that only 5 chose the name for their child.

  3. To me that is just….interesting to name your child Sherlock. It’s such a household name; that I would imagine that they coudl possibly get teased quite a bit.
I love the rich sounding names like Roland or Winston; but I don’t think I coudl ever name my kid a name so well stereotyped as Sherlock.

Although we are HUGE fans of BBC series and Elementary….the movies with Robert Downey Jr are ok..but I prefer the British guys. 🙂

I would not name my son Sherlock! oh my goodness!! When we were picking our children’s names, we went through the list of random ways other kids could bully and pick on them because of their names… Sherlock would just be asking for it!

No way would I name a baby Sherlock–just think of the nicknames he will probably get called in school! Some people just do not think ahead I guess and the kid will either have to suffer or hopefully have a normal middle name he can go by!

That is a riot! Who knew?? No. I couldn’t do that! – My boys have very traditional names – James and Ryan and no regrets as far as their names go….:)

  8. There are so many different names out there that it is hard to say one is worse than the other as a choice. I do not believe the name defines the child so the name of a child does not bother me whether it is Sherlock or something completely off the wall.

I’m a traditionalist, so I prefer “normal” names, but I can appreciate why some people want to avoid naming their child a name that is shared by thousands of others. I just hope those poor Sherlocks don’t get mocked tirelessly through grade school.

I don’t think it’s quite as bad as Batman or Hashtag, LOL! Sherlock is quite a respectable name, just too closely related to a fictional character. Sherlock’s brother is Mycroft and I can’t say I would name my child Mycroft either.

  13. Pam says:

No I would never name my kid Sherlock. Of course, my dad nicknamed me after his favorite dog so I wouldn’t name my kid a lot of things. 🙂

  14. Melanie says:

Well no I wouldn’t name a baby that but I mean whatever floats your boat right? I would name a dog that…that count? lol That’d be a cute doggie name.

I am not at all surprised. The movie Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. was quite popular. I named my first girl Rebecca Lynn at the time Brian White’s country song, Rebecca Lynn was very popular. I did not name her that because of that song, but everyone assumed I named her after the song. To each their own.

Ha, you have a good point there! After all, Sherlock is an actual proper name. Sir A C Doyle probably had no clue that this name would become so iconic. Ha, did you see the pun!? Sometimes I amuse myself so! 🙂

  25. Karen says:

Maybe the kids hard work, however some of them… The names that the parents given the kids, scares me for the kids. Such as apparently the big one now is naming children after TV channels

  27. Lori says:

Well, I’m potentially about to name a fourth child and I agree it’s not something to take lightly. Our poor 3rd child was nameless for a full 48 hours after birth because I wanted his name to be right, with his older sister and brother we knew before birth, but I think the more children you have the harder it becomes to name them. My poor sister in law is having the challenge of naming her 14th child. I do not envy her one bit. lol

  28. I definitely would not be naming my child Sherlock, that’s for sure! Lol!
