Sherlock BBC Lego Set – We want!!

BBC Sherlock Lego Set?Sherlock BBC Lego Set

Oh yes, make it happen please!

That would be so super cool, just imagine constructing 221 Baker Street with Sherlock and Watson and Moriarty!  What a collector’s item this would be!

So how did this come about?  Well, I had no idea you could do this, but Lego accepts proposals for new Lego character sets.  And if your proposal get’s 10,000 signatures, the company will consider it!

According to the Hollywood Reporter, there are 6 finalists all together, including the Sherlock BBC lego set.   You can view the other finalists here.  I think The Legend of Zelda is a good one, and I also like the Delorean from the Back to the Future Trilogy .  The Japanese architecture is pretty cool too.  I’m surprised there wasn’t an entry for Dr. Who!

But honestly, a Sherlock playset, it’s about high time and sign me up, I would absolutely spend the money to have one in this house.

I mean how many Lego Star Wars ships can one own, we have all of them I think!

Plus LEGO Building Sets are just so amazing anyways.  They spark the imagination, allow kids of all ages to use their creativity and come up with scenes and scenarios out of their own imagination.  I wrote an article about building blocks for kids on squidoo and why I like them so much. (Update: Squidoo has shut its doors 🙁  I will move the article elsewhere and repost the link)

I love that the proposal is for the BBC Sherlock rather than Elementary.  Although I would also have been happy with any of the more traditional Sherlock Holmes characterizations being made into Lego.  There are so many constants like the apartment at 221B Baker Street and Sherlock in his overcoat.  It would be all good!

If you could make a proposal to LEGO for a playset, what would it be and why?

Update 2016.  Sadly this Sherlock BBC Lego Set was never made.  However Nerds all over the world do have some other awesome Lego sets to choose from, check them out below!

BBC Sherlock Series 3 Episode 1

BBC Sherlock Series 3 Episode 1Only a few more days till BBC Sherlock Series 3, Episode 1 premiers in North America!  Ok, I’m in Canada and I’ve already seen it.  And it’s not because the Queen of England is still our constitutional monarch, we get no special access to Sherlock or even Downton Abbey!

My teenagers procured  a copy and I didn’t want to know how they did it.  When it comes to Sherlock, watch first, ask questions later!

Very first impression?  They tried too hard to be funny.  Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED it.  But in the first 2 BBC Series, they were naturally funny, it was so sublime that one could easily miss a thing here or there and then you got it later on or on a second viewing.  It seemed like now that they knew their audience a little better that they set out to be funny and we could tell.  But no matter, there is plenty to love still.

Ok, so I won’t give too much away, although it’s already all over social media if you are looking for it.  Just a few of my favorite things.

John Watson’s fiancé played by Amanda Abbington (his real life partner).  I was so ready to not like her!  Maybe because the chemistry between Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch was so good, and I didn’t want that to be tampered with.  Could also be due to the fact that in the Hollywood Sherlock movies starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, Dr. Watson’s fiancé was so unlikeable!  Did not like her one bit!  But this Mary, I really, really like.

Which can only mean one thing.  They will kill her off.  Make you fall in love with her and then get rid of her.

Other favorite moments:

  • The episode opens with Anderson outlining his latest ‘conspiracy theory’ to Lestrade, a scenario that was so weirdly bizarre,  it had us shouting at the TV (we thought they were revealing the actual way he survived the fall)
  • Anderson has formed a club (The Empty Hearse) where they discuss theories about how Sherlock might have survived.  At the latest meeting all of their phones start going off at once with the twitter hashtag #SherlockLives.  My son pointed out that they were making fun of people like me!  And true enough, there was a lot of playful poking at the huge fan base this show has built.
  • The look on Sherlock’s face when he meets Molly’s new boyfriend (that’s all I’m going to say!)
  • A lot more interaction between Mycroft and Sherlock.
  • We meet Sherlock’s parents (played by Benedict Cumberbatch’s actual parents!).

Well, I think that is enough to whet your appetite for this episode! BBC Sherlock Series 3 Episode 1

If you want to get caught up before this airs, the first two Sherlock BBC Series are available to watch on Netflix, or if you are like me and want to have them forever, get them on Amazon.

Happy watching!  Enjoy.

BBC Sherlock Series 3 Teasers and Trailers

BBC Sherlock Series 3 Teasers and Trailers

Now that the time is winding down to the premiere date of BBC Sherlock Series 3,  pictures, spoilers, teasers and trailers are coming fast and furious!

For me here in Canada, the big night is Sunday, January 19, 2014.  For those of you who are lucky enough to get BBC One, you get a Sherlock Christmas Day special and your air date is January 1, New Year’s Day.  Lucky, Lucky Lucky!

BBC One tweeted this about the Christmas Special:

#Sherlock has been gone for 2 years. But someone isn’t quite convinced that he’s dead.” Many Happy Returns will be available this Christmas

Regardless of which continent you live on, a few weeks from now,  we will all know everything about BBC Sherlock Series 3!

For those who have not been keeping up with Everything Sherlock,  here is what we know so far:

  • John Watson now has a moustache
  • Sherlock didn’t die  #sherlocklives

  • John falls in love with Mary Morsten and there will be a wedding in Episode 2

  • Episode 1 is called The Empty Hearse
  • Episode 2 is called The Sign of Three
  • Episode 3 is called His Last Vow
  • Did I mention that John now has a moustache ?

So while it is clear that Sherlock Holmes survived his apparent suicide from the rooftop of St. Barts hospital, what is still not clear is how he did it.  My teens and I blogged our own theories on what happened in The Reichenbach Fall episode, and there are many more clues out there being discussed at great length.

As a publicity stunt, a hearse was driven around the streets of London bearing the hashtag #sherlocklives.  Brilliant!

BBC Sherlock Series 3

And there is this heart breaking image of John sitting alone in a diner, depressed about losing his best friend while Sherlock looks in from the outside. Sigh …

BBC Sherlock Series 3

So with a few days off over Christmas, I will be having a BBC Sherlock marathon, getting  the first 2 series (only 6 episodes) all fresh in my mind again.  Sherlock Series 1 and 2 episodes are both available on Netflix.  If you don’t have Netflix, you can get them here from Amazon.  I have already watched the first 2 series twice, they are so full of interesting and intricate dialogue, foreshadowing and just plain incredible casting, you will watch these shows multiple times to take it all in.

I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and I will see you all in 2014!

The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz

The House of Silk by Anthony HorowitzThe House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz

My hands practically trembled as I opened to the first page of The House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz.  This is not simply one of the many books inspired by Sherlock Holmes or based on Sherlock Holmes or part of the whole Sherlock Homes resurgence of late.

This book is in fact a New Sherlock Holmes novel that has been approved and endorsed by the estate of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The first authentic Sherlock Holmes novel to be written and published in over a hundred years!

That makes this book very unique.  But can it live up to the very big shoes of Sir AC Doyle?

I say yes. I believe that the House of Silk captures the essence of the old stories and recreates the aura of 221B Baker Street for us to visit once again.

As usual, Dr. Watson is narrating the adventure, except that this time he is an old man and Holmes has long since passed.  He is remembering their last and most shocking escapade in the year 1890.

Plot synopsis from Amazon.com:

London, 1890. 221B Baker St. A fine art dealer named Edmund Carstairs visits Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson to beg for their help. He is being menaced by a strange man in a flat cap – a wanted criminal who seems to have followed him all the way from America. In the days that follow, his home is robbed, his family is threatened. And then the first murder takes place.

Almost unwillingly, Holmes and Watson find themselves being drawn ever deeper into an international conspiracy connected to the teeming criminal underworld of Boston, the gaslit streets of London, opium dens and much, much more. And as they dig, they begin to hear the whispered phrase-the House of Silk-a mysterious entity that connects the highest levels of government to the deepest depths of criminality. Holmes begins to fear that he has uncovered a conspiracy that threatens to tear apart the very fabric of society.

Our favorite characters are all there.  Lestrade of Scotland Yard, given a much more sympathetic view in this rendition. Mrs. Hudson, always ready to serve tea to calm the nerves of her tenants.  The self serving brother, Mycroft Holmes wanders in and out and of course Dr. Watson, always there to record the events and provide the occasional life saving piece of intelligence.

We are reminded that Holmes is at once a brilliant and somewhat broken man.  The addictions nag at him and while the lesser mortals struggle to understand the simplest of clues, he has already understood the conclusion and patiently and not so patiently waits for them to catch up.  We see that his superior intellect is also a curse and very isolating.

I really loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone whether you are a solid Sherlock Holmes fan, or have never heard of him!  You will enjoy this novel either way.
The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel is available on Amazon.com.

The game is once again afoot!

Vanishing Girl by Shane Peacock

Young Sherlock Holmes Stories : Vanishing Girl by Shane PeacockVanishing Girl by Shane Peacock

A wealthy young girl vanishes in thin air in front of a large crowd of people near Hyde Park and nobody sees what happened.  Even more shocking,  over 2 months after the girl has disappeared and is presumed dead, a ransom note surfaces at Scotland Yard.  The missing girl is connected to the beautiful Irene Doyle, and so Sherlock, driven by his need to repair his relationship with Miss Doyle and show the world that he is the master detective of all time, decides he must solve this case at all costs.

By now, in this third book of the series Vanishing Girl: THE BOY SHERLOCK HOLMES, HIS 3RD CASE  everyone is against Sherlock.  Despised and ridiculed by Scotland Yard, bullied by the local street gangs, rejected by Irene Doyle, Sherlock races against time to save the girl’s life as well as an innocent young boy.  His desperation clouds his judgment and causes him to make a near fatal mistake.

Vanishing Girl by Shane Peacock is the third book in the award winning Boy Sherlock Holmes series.  It is in this book that some major character development takes place in young Sherlock.

Throughout much of the book, he is not all that likeable and comes across as arrogant and self centered.  His motivation to solve the crime is fueled entirely by self interest.  He wants to prove them all wrong and have the world see just how great he is. He wants to win back the affections of Irene. In other words, he is behaving like a somewhat normal teenage boy.  This boy however is not like your average teenager and happens to have superior powers of deduction and a driving need to succeed.  However his superior intellect does not allow him to see that lives are hanging in the balance and there are consequences to his actions and inactions.

In this book we are starting to see some insights into the eccentric and gifted but somewhat troubled adult Sherlock.  I found it fascinating!

Sherlock fans of all ages will enjoy this series of 6 Sherlock Holmes stories about the young Sherlock.

Sherlock Babies: Would You Do it?

sherlock babiesSherlock Babies: Would You Do it?

I don’t quite know what to make of the fact that in 2012, 5 couples chose to name their baby Sherlock!  Five! There are five Sherlock babies out there and presumably a few more that were born in 2013.

According to RadioTimes, that name ranked along with Ulysses,  Roland and Timofey at five a piece.

I grew up with a kid named Roland in the neighborhood, I would have thought that name to get more than five.  It’s also interesting that the name Benedict (Benedict Cumberbatch is the star of the BBC Sherlock series) managed to get 114 babies lined up with the name in 2012.

It would be fascinating to see how those 5 Sherlock babies turn out with that name.  They say that your name can play an important part in your life, with some names like Winston and Roosevelt having a higher rate of success as adults.  But do kids with rich sounding names aspire to their names, or do wealthy families give out those sorts of names?

So would naming your son Sherlock push him to greater heights of learning and intellect? Or will the inevitable beatings on the school playground turn him into a tough competitor and/or a man with no heart?

I am reminded of that famous Johnny Cash song “A Boy Named Sue”.

I wonder what the parents are thinking.  Are they fans of Sherlock Holmes?  Was it the crazed, drug addicted  Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock they were thinking of?  Or was it the slightly awkward but adorable Sherlock of Elementary
they adore? What about the high functioning sociopath persona of the BBC Sherlock?

Having named four children myself, it is not a task that one takes lightly.  Having said that, my own parents named me after a 1950’s Swedish sex kitten that my Dad was totally in love with.  (Guess the name and let me know in the comments who you think that is! ).  Also, there were those parents who named their baby Hashtag a year or so ago.  Ok, maybe people don’t really think these things through.

Death in the Air by Shane Peacock

Death in the Air by Shane PeacockDeath in the Air by Shane Peacock

After the tragic death of his mother in his arms, young Sherlock Holmes has dedicated his life to fighting crime.  It does not take long for him to find another case.  While visiting his father at work in the beautiful Crystal Palace, Sherlock witnesses the star trapeze artist fall suddenly to his death just a few feet away.

With all attention focused on the body, Sherlock notices something wrong with the trapeze bar and realizes that foul play is afoot!  A reward is offered to further tempt Sherlock, as he is about to lose his home with the strange apothecarist Sigursen Bell. The reward money would indeed solve that problem.

As well, there is the unbreakable vow he gave to his dying mother.  He must solve this crime no matter the cost.  What he does not know is taking on this case will lead him through the dark underbelly of London’s entertainment industry and its association with organized crime.

Death in the Air: The Boy Sherlock Holmes, His Second Case
Death in the Air is the sequel to Shane Peacocks first book in the award winning Boy Sherlock Holmes series.

What I love about this series is the attention to detail given to life in the streets of 19th century London.  It is hard to imagine 12 and 13 year old children living in the way depicted by Peacock and yet research shows the historical accuracy of these accounts.

There are so many twists and turns in this book.  One minute you think you have it all figured out and the next minute that theory is blown away by turning a few pages.

This book is easy enough for tweens to read yet captivating for adults as well.  I am a huge fan of everything Sherlock and I cannot put these books down once I start.

I also highly recommend reading Eye of the Crow: The Boy Sherlock Holmes, His First Case.  I review that book as well in this blog post.  These are the types of books that could get your kids interested in reading for recreation!

Sherlock Holmes as a Senior Citizen?

I’m actually sort of liking the idea!  Apparently Sir Ian McKellan will play the aging detective in a movie called ‘A Slight Trick of the Mind’.

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you will know the amazing Sir Ian McKellan from the Hobbit movies (Gandalf) and the X-Men movies, among many, many other roles in a brilliant career spanning several decades.

The director will be Bill Condon, who also directed ‘Fifth Estate’ with Benedict Cumberbatch of BBC Sherlock Fame.

The plot line will follow a retired Sherlock Holmes living in a quiet village with his housekeeper and her sleuthing son.  He is haunted by an old unsolved case and must deal with the realities of an aging mind, causing him to question his mental powers.

I think this will be very different from anything Sherlock we have ever seen.  It looks like a promising endeavor.  Bill Condon and Ian McKellan worked together on Gods and Monsters’ , earning  a Best Actor nomination for McKellan and winning a Best Screenplay for Condon.

So while viewing Sherlock Holmes as a senior citizen in the not so prime of his life will be different, I think it will be a high quality addition to the Everything Sherlock catalogue.

In the meantime, you can sink your teeth into some other classic Ian McKellan movies and posters …

BBC Sherlock Series 3 Premiere Date Revealed!

BBC Sherlock Series 3 PremiereOh my goodness, my British teacups are rattling with excitement!

Not only has there been an announcement by Entertainment Weekly for BBC Sherlock Series 3 Premiere on January 19, it will be showing right after my other favorite British series, Downton Abbey.  These two shows are the best shows on the air, or about to be on the air, in my humble opinion!

Sunday nights on PBS Masterpiece will be my TV night of choice, although for me it will be a late night!  Sherlock starts at 10pm and as you know these are long episodes, pretty much movie length.  I get up at 5am, but such small sacrifice for the two best shows on the air.

The first episode of Sherlock Series 3 will be called The Empty Hearse and will explain how Sherlock survived the plunge to his death.  I’m pretty sure I have already figured it out and you can read my list of Sherlock death clues here.  What I am now wondering is did Jim Moriarty really die as well?  After all, he is a pretty even match for the intellect of Sherlock and it seems odd to me that he would take his life like that just to win a game.

Series 3 of Sherlock will also feature Watson getting married to Mary Morstan.

I am already in agony that Sherlock Series 3 will only be 3 episodes again, making the series over on Feb 2, and then we wait again!  Both Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freedman (Watson) have indicated publicly that they will do a Series 4, but there is no actual confirmation from anywhere else that I know of.

So, who will be watching this with me on Sunday nights?

Be sure to get caught up, Series 1 and 2 are free on Netflix or you can get your very own copies from Amazon.

BBC Sherlock When Will Series 3 Air?

BBC Sherlock when will series 3 air

BBC Sherlock When Will Series 3 Air?

Clues are being dropped by the show’s two leading actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, but they are not that promising.

And now we have word from the series writer Stephen Moffat:

“I would place good money on it being at the very end or the very beginning of the year.”

Arrrggghhhhh.    Many fans had hoped for October but now we just get to wait.

However, one bit of good news that has been gleaned is that both Cumberbatch and Freeman have stated that they are on board to do Series 4.

And here is a frustratingly tiny trailer for Series 3 just to whet your appetite and make you crazy:

And if you are still not caught up on the series, it is free on Netflix and you can also purchase from Amazon.

Be sure to read my theories on how Sherlock survived his jump in the Sherlock Series 2 Cliff hanger!
